What seems like a good combo on paper translated well on the remix of "Odd Look" as The Weeknd harmonizes to a signature electro production from Kavinsky. A nice add to the rotation just behind Weeknd's new single "Belong To The World".
The Weeknd's first Complex cover, if I'm not mistaken. And it's a poppin' one; love the colors. Weeknd doesn't do any interviews (this being his first) so for any fan of his, the cover story is a must-read. He details the creative process with Drake on the Take Care album (plus their current friendship), his upcoming album Kiss Land being that of a horror story, admiring R. Kelly and Portishead, and more.
Weeknd samples the latter's "Machine Gun" for his new song and video "Belong To The World", which premiered on MTV today as well (seen below). Portishead's Geoff Barrow tweeted that The Weeknd didn't have permission to use the sample, however. We'll see how that plays out business-wise.
But for the song and video itself: I rock with it. I think it's stronger than the "Kiss Land" title track as the Portishead sample really adds a pulsating feel to the track. The chorus stands out... and then there's the video. It was shot in Japan by Anthony Mandler and has a cinematic intro to add to the story. In brief, I like the video a lot too and "Belong To The World" is an instant *Tibs Fav. all around. Watch it for yourselves below!
Great news for Weeknd fans today as plans for a full fall tour have been revealed with his upcoming sophomore album, Kiss Land, slated for "the end of summer" via Republic Records. The flyer above is for his stop in our hometown of Chicago (two nights at the Chicago Theatre... if he sells those out, that's definitely a step up) and the rest of the tour dates can be seen below.
