"Brandy‘s little sister lame and you know it now."
- Kanye West
Kanye West made his first appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon tonight, a surprise one at that, as he joins The Roots and is accompanied by Charlie Wilson for a performance of the Yeezus fan favorite "Bound 2".
And wow, did this come to life live, huh? Not only was 'Ye flanked by the booming vocals of Charlie Wilson, but also a children chorus for help on the sample. The live version of "Bound 2" was filled with soul from all of the above (The Roots and Mano included) and that's fitting for the many who call the album's concluding track Yeezus' most soulful, "throwback Kanye" jam.
I thoroughly enjoyed this performance and feel like it's a great glimpse of what's to come on the Yeezus tour (tickets on sale Friday!)
And this story is too good not to be made up. Questlove explains to OKP in detail how, when looking for his wallet, he found a brand new iPhone, sifted through the photos and some contacts to see that it has to be J. Cole's. Hah! They must've been riding the same van with a month plus in between. Hah! While this is a reminder that the world is small, this is also a reminder on me to put a security code on my iPhone. But hey, if I ever lose my unlocked iPhone, maybe my #1 crush Hannah McKay will find it and can tweet at me :D
Elvis Costello and The Roots are combining for a joint album, in case you missed the news on the odd but promising collab. Today, the tracklist for Wise Up Ghost is revealed via Questlove's instagram. The album drops September 17th. Lookin' forward to it — no features on it, but perhaps that'll change?
Sometime between the ending of the Game 6 OT thriller and during Gregg Popovich's tear-inducing postgame press conference, Ice Cube was performing an all-time hip hop classic live with The Roots on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Fortunately, we can watch the powerful and nostalgic performance above — really a chilling, must-see when you see Ice Cube's raw energy mixed with the soulful grooves provided by Questlove & Co. The Roots bring out the song's iconic notes with their usual jazzy twist, giving the song a fresh 2013 feel. Even Fallon himself set the tone with an extra level of genuine excitement than usual as he introduced Ice Cube. Not much else to say except, press play above.
Even though I'm a couple nights late, I'd be remiss not to show this late night TV performance some love. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis performed "Thrift Shop" with help from The Roots on Jimmy Fallon. This one's a straight jam session - look how much fun everyone is having playing and enjoying the music. Love the energy.
