Kobe Bryant reportedly put a window on his NBA career today, according to CBS Sports, with "The window, he is ready to acknowledge, is two years. Two more chances to catch Jordan." The news story continues,
"It's not about health necessarily," he said. "It's about, 'Do I want to do it? Do I have that hunger to continue to prepare at a high level?'"
So much so that the next question -- about whether Bryant would ever change his mind and hang on for an extra year or two as a role player averaging 15 points just to pad his championship resume -- needn't have been asked. "That's not gonna happen," Bryant said. "That's just not me."
Kobe fans, what do you think? While I don't see him as a 15 PPG role player at age 40, I think a lot can change between now and then. How long do you see Kobe playing?
Last month, I shared a story that said that Justin Timberlake was set to become a minority owner of the Memphis Grizzlies and today, the news is that he's not alone. Peyton Manning is set to join JT and Penny Hardawayin the minority owner role, which makes more sense if you know that Peyton went to the University of Tennessee and Penny went to college and grew up in Memphis. Looks like Brooklyn won't be the only new "it" place this season to catch a bball game, huh? Hopefully they all attend the same game and the three seemingly unreleated sports/music stars can make for one cool photo. More info via Ball Don't Lie.
Just watched this moving video above of Portland Trail Blazers rookie and former University of Illinois standout Meyers Leonard receiving an emotional surprise visit from his older brother, Bailey, who was serving overseas in Afghanistan for the Marine Corp. The brothers lost their father at a young age (Meyers was only 6) and so Bailey was a bit of a father figure for Meyers when growing up. At a game last year at the University of Illinois, a crew follows Bailey into Assembly Hall to surprise Meyers and watch his little brother play. Can't help but be affected by this gesture and family love seen above and I just wanted to share this heartwarming video to you today after seeing it amongst my Facebook statuses this afternoon. *tips hat* to my college homie Thek and Break.
NBA 2K13 in stores tomorrow! And today, they reveal one of their more powerful TV spots, as you may recognize who nararates the video above. That same person is a special guest caller in one of their recent promotional videos discussing the greatest dunker of all time. High comedy below in case you missed that.
If you're planning on copping 2K on PS3, play your boy Sgt. Tibs online at "gowherehiphop". See ya on the (virtual) court.
Tonight at the new Barclays Center, Jay-Z performed the first of two shows to break in the new Brooklyn arena. He not only debuted a new verse a few hours ago, but also donned the first Brooklyn Nets jersey - wearing number #4, which is his and the wife's lucky number (born December 4th and September 4th respectively. The number is retired for Wendell Latner). You can see him rockin' the away threads in the grainy clear photo below (updated via NBA) and see the official images the NBA just put out above. The unis are now officially on sale.
I was expecting something a little more abstract, but I do dig the font choices and you can't go wrong with a sharp black and white fit. Your thoughts on the uniforms?
To piggyback on the NBA arena post from Kuda today, I got one here courtesy of the Phoenix Suns, who today revealed a new court design via this entertaining 3 minute time-lapse video. Looks like it only takes a handful of people to place panel by panel, ha! Would have expected more for some reason. As for the design itself, I dig the black borders on the baselines and sidelines and the orange is a nice touch too. Blows their previous, bland court design out of the water. Plus, gotta love the two-tone courts. Two-tone courts are as hot of a trend in the NBA as a 2 Chainz feature is right now, ha. Truuuuuu?!
Kawai Leonard and Danny Green sport the new San Antonio Spurs alternate jerseys, which will be worn at various home games during the upcoming 2012-2013 campaign. I really like the number placement on the front and overall I rock with the new threads, especially since they won't replace the classic Spurs jerseys. What do you guys think of them?
Perhaps the biggest new feature of NBA 2K13 we're most anticipating... the Dream Team! This brand new trailer shows the greatest team ever up against it's greatest test ever - the 2012 gold medalists - in a matchup that we're all going to recreate within .007 seconds of putting the game in. Gotta love that ending.
Watch and enjoy above and as a bonus, here's the 'All Star' trailer below that I missed recently. NBA 2K13 is in stores October 2nd. (Ladies, take note. This day is like Madden's release date, part 2.)
Piggybacking on Srirachana's post below, earlier today at the adiZero Rose 3 launch, there was an emotional moment where Derrick shed humble tears of reflection — both personally on what he and his family overcame growing up in Englewood, and with everything going on in our hometown (the crime and the CPS teachers strike which Rose tweeted on the other day) that we really feel Rose cares about. It was simply an incredible moment that epitomizes once again why Chicago roots so hard for one of their own, one who represents the city and one who rises above. Yup, adidas got it right: D. Rose will rise.
