A few days ago I had the privilege to attend a Hip-Hop event at Township. The event's performers were Benny Nice, Mick Jenkins, Jarred A.G. , Matty Rico, and an onslaught of invited performers that rocked the mic. I provided footage from the event so that you could distinguish how they perform live in comparison to how their tracks sound. This allows you to see how developed their work is live and wether or not you believe they have the stage presence that can take them to the next level of Hip-Hop. Every major name in the game has an enormous stage presence and for these upstarts it's important to showcase what they can do and how they are able to emotionally capture crowds in their attempt to become the next big name to come out of the city of Chicago.

Has put out an Ep F*ckYou, Benny and has collaborated with Second City Citizens, Pimp Jong-ILL, Jarred A.G. , Matty Rico, Rich Jones, among many others.
Tonight is another GWHH-Sponsored event as four Chicago up and comers are set to entertain in what'll definitely be a family feel tonight at Township. One of 5ABIOmatic's favorite emcees from the Chi, Mick Jenkins will be joined by one of my favorites, Matty Rico, as well as Jarred A.G. and Benny Nice starting at 9pm. It's only $5 at the door so we hope to see you there!
Up and at 'em with a fresh GWHH PREMIERE this morning as Chicago emcee Matty Rico links with skateboarder Lamont Holt for the music video to "Black Enough". As you can imagine, Holt showcases an array of jumps and tricks to further engage the firsttime listener. Seriously, I wish I could do that. What also stands out is the way the cameraman was following him on a skateboard as well, getting some raw, high-speed, clean shots in the process. And to end the video on a comical, light-hearted note, director Rory Kramer left in some raw footage of the crew reigned in by police while shooting the video. Stay tuned through til the end, hah!
Now the song itself is a personal tale from Rico, talkin about the soul in his music, the move from Chicago to L.A., and even the contradictions, both personally and in a relationship to hip hop. The lyrics, as much as the skateboarding, grabs your attention on first listen. "Black Enough" is one of the standout tracks, and a *Tibs Fav., off the new project, New American. Give the video a look-see and proceed to the project to hear more from yet another talented artist out on the Chi, prime to make some big moves in 2013.
New American dropped a couple weeks ago when our site went down, so unfortunately I wasn't able to post it then. I couldn't let much more time go without getting this up — a project I personally suggest you run through.
Matty Rico is a talented rapper we've built with here in our hometown of Chicago. He has sinced moved to the City of Angels and his new project New American represents the growth that can come with changing locations. He has a way of delivering his personal emotions and perspective on life that resonates with you on first listen. That's seen right away on the chilling "New American Intro" and carried throughout other instant *Tibs Favs. like "Black Enough" (peep our GWHH Premiere of the video) and "Afraid". At the end of the day, Rico has a lot of hometown pride as seen on the soulful and energetic "Sweet Home Chicago" — a true, feel-good Chicago hip hop anthem. At 10 tracks, New American is the perfect length, so begin below and stream each track individually and download it all in a .zip file above!
