I am very pleased & excited to introduce you to Young General’s Hip-Hop For Adults, Vol. 2. The new mixtape kicks off with “I’m A Beast,” a track mixing Young G’s lyrical dexterity with the scratching and table riffing of DJ My Boy Elroy. I’ve seen this song performed live with a band on a few occasions, and while it is indeed a crowd-pleaser, a more apt label is “crowd-winner” – it’s a song that can be performed to an unknown audience to win their attention.
The song works the same way in this series, inviting listeners into Young General’s follow-up to 2011’s Vol. 1. The lush production from G’s regular collaborator Letter L gives the track an introductory feel before it settles into its booming refrain. Feels like an action film’s opening credits. Perhaps that’s why G was inspired to rip off a series of superhero mentions in the song’s second verse.
For the new October/November edition of VIBE, we see none other than Eminem gracing the cover as part of an exclusive reunion of the cast of 8 Mile, 10 years after its release. (Wow... 10 years ago I remember seeing this as a freshman in high school. Thanks for successfully making me feel old, hah!)
The full cover story can be read here - and it's a must-read for fans of the classic movie. It's a ping pong discussion between Em, Mekhi Phifer (Future), Anthony Mackie (Papa Doc), Omar Benson Miller (Sol), and Evan Jones (Cheddar Bob) that ranges from the chemistry and creative process on set, how Mekhi was initially going to pass on the film, and even a dope tidbit on "Lose Yourself", excerpted below.
I remember doing “Lose Yourself.” I went to the trailer during lunch and laid a scratch from top to bottom, just one take through and then stacked some ad-libs and shit. I was going to come back and re-do it. I actually ended up keeping it. That’s my most vivid memory—that song, and walking around set with a pad of paper. If I didn’t have that, I’d write it on my hand. I was like a little hamster: I’d go from my lunch trailer to the treadmill to run and then jump to the music trailer to make some beats.
Music biz news comes in via the official press release announcing The-Dream's new position as the V.P. of A&R at Def Jam Records. He will be signing new talent to the label and producing tracks for the label's artists as well. Below: his quotable and an unrelated GIF of Ichiro's awesome swipe of home on a base-hit earlier tonight.
I am committed as I have been previously to bringing the power of belief in the artist back to the forefront. I share a unique view of an artist and as well as the business of music. I, with the help of many others, have ran a successful business for the last five years in the midst of the “Digital Change.” My concentration and effort will be to the artist to succeed in their dreams and goals. I’ve been a part of watching and participating in the success of many great women and men including Beyonce, Rihanna, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion to name a few. Music means more than just a download, it’s life to the culture and also the people who listen. This is a new exciting yet critical time for music – ‘You Meet Change with Change!’
Teaser track to break ADII's (Andrew Davis II) silence since his last release "My Dream The Mixtape". Having just relocated to Los Angeles from Chicago, he looks to spark his buzz back up with a series of dope new tracks, starting with this one, "Chevy Dreams". This track was laced by Chicago producer Mr. Hyde and singer D. Train. Enjoy.
Small City x Big Dreams is Dylan Williams highly anticipated sophomore project, and the first look into his own personal style of music. The reason for the name of the project is due to Williams being from Toledo, Ohio which is a very "Uknown" city when it comes to hip hop/ rap music and his dreams of one day making it out, not just making it minor and becoming satisfied. Hosted by Dj Capcom & Dj Logikal, also presented by "Believe The Hype" apparel and "Blumouth". Now give it a listen for yourself!
