Late last night, Cocaine 80s released their new EP, The Flower Of Life and I'd be remiss not to put the spotlight on them even more after their group's strongest release to date.
The No I.D.-led collective first came together last year and, without warning to this date, released new music and EPs for free. James Fauntleroy, a singer/songwriter I've been following for years, is the primary vocalist on the soothing, soulful records that fans of the group from the start are now accustomed to. Common is a part of the collective as well, not holding back on some superb verses along the way. Together, and with various guest stars along the way (like Nas, and most recently Jhene Aiko), Cocaine 80s is creating their own lane of urban music.
How, you may ask? By mixing soulful R&B with throwback hip hop beats, acoustic chords, and most of all some intelligent and spiritual lyricism. The Flower Of Life most directly exhibits the latter, with songs like "Lucid" and "Higher Self" - to go along with the whole aesthetics of the cover. It really resonates with us on the spiritual end as well; after all, Maks G coincidentally designed a "Flower Of Life" sweater for Limited G.

Simply put, a must-grab. Every track is dope and flows together for the perfect body of work to chill out to today. Common is featured on track 1, "kuro to shiro" and "big ass pisces" (with Jhene Aiko).
A couple days ago was the first preview of the upcoming EP, The Flower Of Life, and today we have the second one - another solo jam from James Fauntleroy. I vibe with "Lucid" a little more, but the content and positivity of Fauntleroy's mindset on both of these tracks are right in line with us here at Gowhere. For that alone, I'll have this one in my rotation.
Could this be anymore in line with Limited G's Flower Of Life crew? And beyond that, the lyrical content of this first release off the new Cocaine 80s EP touches on lucid dreams. Maks G not only designed that Flower Of Life crew, but he also had a convo with Scottie Pimpen and I about lucid dreaming just a couple weeks ago. Gotta appreciate the synchronicity!
As for the song itself, I love the acoustic combo with R&B and that's what Fauntleroy executes with "Lucid" here on this solo effort. An easy *Tibs Fav. and a fitting play for your rotation today on 12.21!
