You all remember "SLR" right? What many consider Lupe's career best lyrical output. Yeah, here's part 2. Allow me to digest this with you all. The disclaimer of "no beef...." adds to the intrigue...
Gotta admit... on first listen, I was like... what is Lu talkin' like Hitler for...? Then, hah! Loved it.
ICYMI (earlier tonight): Lupe Fiasco "#DopeFrancis (American Trap)"
Just had a chance to digest "SLR 2" and Lu responds to Kendrick in true Lupe fashion... first, by exclaiming his dismay in everyone's short-term memory about the hype around "Control" and his own accomplishments. Later, he has these lines directly aimed at Kendrick Lamar.
"Now we all heard what he said, but what he said means we dead
And that shit is insane
He's so crazy, look at the little baby
N**** you ain't Nas, n**** you ain't Jay Z
You will respect me, you will reject me
But I've done so much, no matter how far you go, you will reflect me."
Lu's references to Kendrick: the first two lines above, "little baby" (K. Dot's babyface and alternate GKMC cover), and the first two emcees Kendrick puts in the convo as best emcee ever with himself on "Control" (Nas & Jay-Z). And then the serve with the last line. Given Kendrick's entrance into the game and his fast-rise to one of hip hop's top lyricists, Lu is basically saying they'll always be compared and since Lupe has done so much to this point (he's simply ahead of his time, IMO), and done it sooner (it's just timing) he confidently boasts K. Dot's accomplishments will simply be a reflection of Lupe laying down the path. I love that punchline, Lu. K. Dot though, he'll be carving his own path. I'm just glad Lupe's tossing out some competitive bars and that these two will be remembered for their lyricism for years and generations to come.
Moving on, Lupe even had a thing to say about Jay Z...
"Took two sips of the holy grail
Then I backed up and I turned around
And I bent over and put two'd shit
I love Jay, that's my nigga
I feel sicker than a cruise ship
I ain't competition, I on't move shit,
The only opposition is his new shit"
And the game in general...
"These new n****s rappin' like they 2
They be actin' like they you, man that's whew shit
What happened to the game?
N****s think they Jappin' cause they rappin' like they Wayne
Rappin' like they Chainz"
- Lupe Fiasco
So the final verdict: this one's about the words. I can critique little things about the production and even a couple words I felt were delivered a little flat by Lupe, but that's not what "SLR 2" is about. Lupe proves once again he can raise the bar for hip hop as he creatively delivers an assortment of direct messages and commentary on the game. While the Hitler reaction will surely be one of the song's dominant lasting memories, it warrants mentioning that Lupe also paints some vivid metaphorical pictures throughout (the beginning bars on "bananas" and then giving his "antonyms" and "metaphors" drug enhanced power... I can imagine a comic book style video for this song.)
With these releases tonight, this and "#DopeFrancis", Lupe stays going over people's heads. And if you follow Lu's (now private) twitter, he indicates he recorded this in a matter of a few hours earlier tonight. Hah! I have this feeling he could have kept going.
Now combine "SLR 2" with Mickey Factz' post-midnight response to Kendrick and I'm not sure Kendrick can stay mum to these two. At least I'm hoping he doesn't...
What a great couple days of hip hop, huh?
