Because we hustled all weekend long, got cornered into mosh pits, and destroyed several pairs of shows, we, the gowherehiphop team, did this all for you.
SXSW is amazing not just because of the conference but also the concerts and even better surprise concerts surrounding the event. Bumping shoulders with celebs on the street, enjoying BBQ on the streets, and running to shows as if we were trick or treating for candy, I have SXSW’s recap…
Myspace Secret Show: Myspace has relaunched their site and they have come back with a VENGENCE. Tickets were only given as a first come first serve and surprise tweets from myspace. Our own video team captured Kid Cudi’s performance, now with over 100,000 views!!! You, our beloved followers saw it here first! Other performances included Diplo, Sleigh Bells, JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE, ?uestlove, RjD2, ***Pinches self***… this all actually happened!
The FADER FORT presented by Converse: Absolute mayhem but in the best way possible. I think the line was 1000 people long but definitely worth it for the eager concert goers. A huge tented fort featuring video game tents with Call of Duty, free cotton candy, free HOBNOB wine, Vitamin water for necessary hydration, Hard Rock & Fender booth with priceless memorabilia, kept fans busy between shows and DJ sets. Fader Fort brought a super stacked line up from all weekend long with Kimbra, Kendrick Lamar, Danny Brown, Big K.R.I.T., Bun B, and French Montana. Not to mention, a surprise appearance by Usher chilling then later performing at the fort with Afghan Wings… oh you know… NBD, another only at SXSW happening.
#VICELAND: Snoop Lion, Ghostface Killah, and Kendrick Lamar headlined the night parties. The 'land was always dope and a go to for everynight. Though none of the rumors circling that Jay Z would surprise show up were true, #Viceland offered free drinks and an urban Disneyland like feel for hip hop aficionados fueled with Pepsi products and free alcoholic drinks. On the last night, Kendrick Lamar almost shut down the place. Reaching capacity, the police had to monitor capacity limits as Kendrick ran the stage.
MTVU Woody Awards - Music College Kids Love: An all day event with an award show at nightfall. The venue featured Salt Lick, the best barbeque in Austin, Mom and Pops posicles, Doritos, and Pepsi products galore… all of which were Free! The venue boasted two stages alternating sets in the daytime, MTVU that primarily featured indie groups and MTVJams for Hip Hop. Transitions between the shows were seamless. There was always something to watch. I was able to check out new acts such as Haim (rhymes with "time"), a Jewish sister trio with non apologetic vocals – also to be featured by NPR’s rising act to follow, and also Twenty One Pilots a duo with intense flame visual and poetic punk reminiscent flow. Weaved between acts were Trinidad James, Joey Bada$$, and closing out the daytime set, Pusha T. The crowd consisting of primarily younger college kids, I wish more of the crowd had appreciation for Pusha T, a classic to say the least. T.I. made a surprise appearance, and yes you can have whatever you like. Coming out in his thrift-store-find 99-cent poncho, Macklemore not only worked up the crowded but also poured his emotions out in his “Same Love” ballad. Tegan and Sara performed and also doubled as hosts alongside Machine Gun Kelley. The night closed out with overstimulation by Zedd… the music, the lights, everything ended the night.
ASOS Lounge: As someone lucky enough to attend parties as a part of the job, ASOS reminds me of all the reasons why I’m in this business. ASOS was an Oasis at Cedar Door away from all the stress and bustle that was SXSW. Hosted by the all inclusive London Fashion brand, ASOS set the tone for a stylishing cool party. We were fueled with lots of Coco Café… I don’t know how I would have survived SXSW without this stuff! Its equal parts coco water, expresso, and goodness. For someone that’s lactose tolerant, this was perfectly refreshing and ideal for a hot day in Austin. Youngblood Hawke and Angel Haze were among the ones to perform on the intimate ASOS stage. The whole crew had tons of fun recharging, playing ping pong, sipping on Asahi beer, and of course shopping ASOS!
