Another hip hop beef is on our hands with old school rapper Ice T taking shots at Soulja Boy (and a slight jab at Hurricane Chris) when asked about the state of hip hop. It came out harsher than he intended I think and Soulja Boy came back at him pretty harshly as well, with some good points at the end of his video, yet also some immature responses in the beginning. Finally, Ice T came back at him one last time 2day, recognizing he was a little bit wrong and apologizing, yet also emphasizing that he thinks Soulja Boy’s music is garbage and his 15 minutes of fame are up. It was definitely an interesting back-and-forth (that contains some rated R language) and while I think both made some valid points, both were also wrong or irrational on some points as well. Ultimately, I have a feeling in the back of my mind that beef is dumb as hell, but also very interesting 2 the naturally curious mind. I’m eager 2 see if the beef ends on YouTube or spills out onto some tracks, especially if some West Coast cats come after Soulja Boy. I’m betting the latter actually happens (as opposed 2 T.I. & 50) but who knows anymore? This lil’ beef also provoked Kanye 2 say these controversial statements about Soulja Boy below:
“Soulja boy is fresh ass hell and is actually the true meaning of what hip hop is sposed to be. He came from the hood, made his own beats, made up a new saying, new sound and a new dance with one song. He had all of America rapping this summer. If that ain’t Hip Hop then what is? A bunch of wannabe keep it real rappers that ain’t even relevant, recycling samples trying to act like it’s 96 again and all they do is hate on new shit? Niggas always talk about the golden age but for a 13 year old kid, this is the golden age!!! That song was so dope cause everything he said had a hidden meaning… that’s Nas level shit… he just put it over some steel drums which is also some Nas shit if you had the 2nd album cassette with the bonus track “Silent Murder” on it. In closing… new niggas get ya money$$$$$$$$$$ Keep this shit fresh and original…. ain’t no fuckin’ rules to this shit and that’s what real hip hop is to me.” - Kanye West
Interesting, indeed. The Nas comparison is a stretch, but I know what he’s trying 2 say. Anyway, enough about that, ya’ll should check out Frankie J below, with his NEW track and video called “Pictures”, a slow jam with some nice lyrics that I like. Be sure 2 DL the NEW T.I. track, GemStones’ mixtape, and scroll below for any updates u may have missed! Enjoy!
Here’s some mainstream trax for the mainstream fans, leading off with an uptempo R&B banger from Frankie J! I’m likin’ the overall feel 2 the song with a hot beat and solid lyrics, and while it’s not an instant classic by any means, I can see myself flippin’ this on in the coming weeks. Below, is the trifecta collaboration btwn Plies, Keyshia Cole, & J. Holiday… not huge on Plies or J. Holiday, but Keyshia Cole’s part in the song makes it a MUST-DL! And below that, DL trax from rapper Cassidy & R&B/pop star Ciara that u mite like as well! Enjoy!
Comin’ thru real late 2nite and luckily it wasn’t an urgent day in NEW music but there are still some cuts from some of ur favs. in R&B and hip hop. The 2 trax from the batch I liked is a hot, uptempo track from R&B singer Mario and the “Where The Cash At RMX” by Swizzy & Foxy B. Warrants mentioning tho that the original is better.. not really feelin’ Foxy’s verse but the beat and Swizzy are on point. Check out The Game & Keyshia vid premiere below as well. Enjoy!
Talib Kweli and Res are back with another hot track above, this one a political statement, shouting out 2 Hillary Clinton, haha. Def an interesting track, especially for those interested in the heated Democratic political race. There are more trax below, including 2 previously unreleased trax by Lupe Fiasco’s longtime friend and rapper, the late Stack Bundles. I’m especially feelin’ “Breaking Up”. Also, there’s some NEW trax f/ R&B singer Frankie J, Akon, & another B. Cox joint f/ the young Crishan. Below that are some LIVE performance videos featuring N.E.R.D. & Usher! Enjoy!
According 2 the iTunes pre-order on Here I Stand, only “Best Thing” (with an added verse by Jay-Z), “Trading Places”, and “This Ain’t Sex” will be on the album, out of all the Usher trax that leaked the past few days. Good 2 kno!
So I got a ton of work on my plate for 2nite, but had 2 come thru and post the HOT RMX I saw in our e-mail of the #6 song on TRL (and rising!) - Kidz In The Hall’s “Drivin’ Down The Block”! It features and is produced by El-P and it’s a sweet sweet remix that ya’ll should DL above 2 support the rise of good hip hop once again. Below are a few more trax that I scraped up for ya - including a nice Roots cover by the versaitile Busta Rhymes and a smooth R&B slow jam by one of my favs - Frankie J! Enjoy!
Here’s 2day’s batch of trax and vids - the featured track being a RMX of one of my fav. songs ever “Can’t Help But Wait” f/ Rick Ross. I like that new beat so def worth a DL for you guys. There’s also the NEW Jay-Z/MJB/Swizzy collabo, a NEW track from Day 26 (not 100% sure if it’s them tho.. but its credited 2 them..?)… a cover of another one of my fav. songs ever - “U Got It Bad” by Frankie J (but why cover such a classic song that can’t get any better? Still good tho.) Also check out another full track from Francisco and a neat behind the scenes look at “75 Bars” from The Roots! Enjoy!
