COKE DIET- He done drinking diet coke, he’s on that coke diet…this is a cocaine trip painting…inspired by “everybody nose”…a cocaine story. So, that’s the concept, but how do i execute it?? I find myself flirting with contemporary pop images (i.e. play-doh, life, etc), so first thing that comes to mind is “coca-cola” often known as “coke”(shared nickname with cocaine.)…i want “coke” to become astro’s friend, but coke has to disguise his cons…has to disguise the fact that he’s a “killer.” So i thought of the title “everybody nose,” and decided to give “coke” the goucho glasses (first painting i put them in, smurfs came later)…and i put the glasses over “cola,” so all u or rather all astro sees is “coca.” The balloons with the color spots represent “the high.” [James]
KILL JOY - After listening to KILL JOY, I wanted to make a painting that symbolized life and death, but i didn’t want it to be too obvious. I began to think of the act of killing “joy”, which may lead to your demise because your erasing the things that made you..YOU…I always heard that people can be read like a book, but what happens when you write in that book, and erase everything before you turn it in to let some one to read?? The paper represents life, and everything on it is something that’s been apart of my life… back in middle/high school ppl would call me a nerd because i acted/thought differently than other guys, and that was foreign…so i’m weird (i guess.) Back in the elementary school, i was a real super soaker junkie…i had soooo many water guns, but as i got older i didn’t collect as many, and started to notice that some of the ppl were trading in their super soakers for actual guns (guess u gotta keep it gangsta, right?) Also, i have
a sweet tooth…like i love candy, and when i was younger i’d always eat blow pops…sour apple and “super blue razz berry,” and then as i got older i sweets became sex ‘cuz “shawty, wanna lick lick lick the lollipop”…haha…I’ve always been a fan of cartoons, from the jetsons to batman tas to death note, but i thought the smurfs were appropriate for this painting…i made them my murderers, and they’re erasing everything i enjoy/love, it hurts so i scream for ice cream, so they put the whip cream and cherry on the lollipop..the killers gotta keep a disguise, so i gave ‘em the groucho specs. LEMONADE - I asked my friend, Midori something that she remembered from her childhood (toy, game, activity) that people of our generation across the nation can relate to, and she replied back lemonade stands. Now lemonade stands had become the concept for my next painting, and that made me think of the saying “when life gives u lemons u make lemonade,” and i decided to take my lil’ spin on that. So, being from Detroit u see a lot of things, some good many bad, but the bad always has a chance to become a good if it wants too…if it believes it can. When you’re black and from “the hood,” society tells you that it’ll be a blessing if you make it to see 25, or if you don’t become a rapper or baller (football, basketball, or even pimp/player) then you have no future…you’re not going to make money, you’ll end up dead or in jail (25 to life if your black)…so yea, 25 seems to be a popular number, and i decided to work with contemporary pop imagery to help get my point across (LIFE and the lemonheads…also, milo from bape.) I put Milo in there because Bape’s releasing a OBAMA SUPPORT shirt that says “vote,” and that made me think wow…black president…black president, which made me think of that 2pac line in changes “We ain’t ready, to see a black President, huh”…Obama came from nothing, but become something…so i guess he took his lemons and made lemonade. The view finder, is suppose to represent the future finder…what u can see in your future, and behind Astroboy is the jail cell, and that’s what he sees in his future because that’s what society told him he’s gonna see…so yea, he looks pissed or rather determined to let that happen to him..sorry for the in-depth explanation, but this painting means a lot to me. Window Spaz - I got inspiration from psychedelic drug stories/experiences that my friends from cali would tell me about. My friend told me about an experience he had after doing shrooms where he could make stuff melt by looking at it, and another friend mentioned how he felt like he was entering different dimensions…they both said the drugs made them trip out…so in the painting the windows represent the different dimensions, and since you’re going through different dimensions…time traveling and what not…might as well strap up the ol’ Nike McFly kicks. Then I thought about the feeling of Tripping out…to spaz out, it would just seem like some one unplugged your brain, you’re aware of it, so you try to plug it back up to gain ur composure…just to chill out a bit, but there’s nothing u can do about it so u spaz out… [James]

The event which is thrown by Perez Hilton, sponsored by Calvin Klein, and presented by BMF Media will be off the chain including special guests Simple Plan! This after party to the Much Music awards is sure to be crawling with many hot celebs, but unfortunately is invite only!

“Based off of Time for some action by N*E*R*D… in a sense this is somewhat political…i was thinking of my boy Davin because he just left for boot camp to go to the army, and i thought of the song TIME FOR SOME ACTION. I feel like when ur in service you loose your identity, you become just a number…essentially that’s what u are in the universe as a whole, but when it comes to your world…your planet earth, you’re the main character, and it has to be a devastating feeling just realizing that you’re nothing but another body.. a number to “them.” You become a generic person…like when u create a player in a video game, and they give u the generic being to start off with…so that’s why i used the Lego..it’s simple, it’s generic, it’s fun (IMO.)
I remember seeing a video of a soldier in iraq being held hostage, and they film the insurgents decapitating the american soldier…so i put the lone lego head at the bottom split in half…but then i thought about “well, they can trap my body, but they can’t trap my mind,” and if No-one Ever Really Dies then your spirit lives, and is set free (in a sense.) I needed an aspect that related to time, so i threw in the kitty kat clock, becuz those clocks are creepy to me..haha. So there you have america, Time for some action…”

Wow, the primary for the Democratic Nominee is finally over; check out Obama’s excellent speech in St. Paul. He is gifted with being so charismatic, and with having the ability to be an excellent public speaker. Universal Health Care UP! Let’s hope the split within the Democratic Party doesn’t falter the Democratic Vote, because that would be a shame. We definitely need a change from this War, Recession, and Debt. Tibs and I were actually right there, smack dab between the two Twin Cities, St. Paul & Minneapolis. You can see Minneapolis in the distance…..what dope cities! I also visited Minnesota’s Weisman Art Museum obviously, so below is some Nationalistic American Art from that visit as well. Much love people!

REBEL LEADERS
Hmmm…where to start?? I wanted to roll with an Indiana Jones theme…the whole jungle look, but with my twist…but I also wanted to use Chicago as the jungle or concrete jungle. Ummm, i replaced natural plants with the piranha plants from Super Mario, and the sunflowers designed by Takashi Murakami…I put a spin on them by adding the ray ban wayfarers. I put those flowers on there because when I was 4 or 5 my great grandmother had a dancing/singing sunflower that wore black wayfarers…so I guess putting those flowers in there was like me paying homage to my great grandmother (r.i.p.) The colored lines on the top are the routes of the Chicago “L”…I just dissected them a bit. Ahhh, yea..in a sense I wanted this to represent my life from age 13-17 where I was sort of a rebel, so I use the “Rebel Leaders” design…Thanks to Rajah for letting me use his design and to Ty for letting me use his store’s logo…appreciate it….so yea, the “L” and the
Rebel LDRS is my shout out to Chi city..yessurrr. “Some say it’s an exit and some say it’s an entrance” - Lupe Fiasco …I thought of that line when I decided to do the subway look…with the doors dividing the two worlds…like on the “outside” u see the subway stop environment, but on the “inside” u see this Nintendo-ish environment…but there’s no actual subway, so are you exiting one world and entering another?? Or is there no exit…just an abyss of different entrances…Oh yea, it glows in the dark too.
Mercury Tears
This painting glows in the dark too…inspired by “Mercury Tears” by Chromeo and “Something About Us” by Daft Punk, and the story goes a lil’ something like this….
So Astroboy says:

Last Living Souls
Painting inspired by “Last Living Souls” by the Gorillaz and “Ben” by Michael Jackson. This painting is 3ft x 4ft, and it glows in the dark. Ok, so the world “ended”, and I’m in search for a friend…I find a robot, and he and I build a real good relationship as friends…he protects me and what not. The color blocks are in the original Lego Block colors and represent the building blocks/foundation of a relationship (honesty, loyalty, etc)…the Clocks read 10:30 and 11:00 because “they say relationships only last 30 minutes long” (Lupe).
Astro Boy Realistic Drawings
My “Astro Boy James” character drawings are done in a realistic manner, and when viewed in person they evoke an eerie but humorous feel (or so I’ve been told) because of the human-like details structured in cartoon contours. The drawings have a strong emphasis on fashion (high-end and urban), pattern, and the contrast/juxtaposition of negative and positive space.
Raw public art turned animation by BLU. I’m impressed, this took ages to create (not just tha actual wall paintings, but the damn animation process) I can only have respect 4 this artist & their creativity. Props to FiveOne for puttin me on.
