Lolla weekend was filled with Childish Gambino. I saw three Gambino shows in 24 hours. I promise... I'm not a stalker... in my definition at least. I took my friend to the Childish Gambino Official Lollapalooza Aftershow Saturday night. I was a bit hesitant to go at first because I thought that nothing could top my experience the first time with Kuda & Sgt. Tibs (back in May). Because my friend had missed his first show, I had more reason to go. From seeing him right after his ankle injury in May to his performances on Lolla weekend, I am able to see how much Gambino is growing exponentially as a rapper. The Camp Tour keeps it real with lyrically layered verses, singing, and set it all to a heavy metal energy with instrumentals.
I saw him again with friends at his Sunday Lollapalooza set, again persuaded by a different set of friends, and he once again exceeded my already sky high expectations. His set was shortened to 60 minutes, but Gambino didn't short change anything. If anything, his energy was even more condensed into his shorter set. He played more of his songs off mixtape Royalty. The whole vibe had changed with his Royalty performance set including We Ain't Them and Uneccessary. It was unanimous among the crowd that he is new hip hop royalty.
Last but not least, the Gowhere team attended his DJ set at the Hard Rock Hotel, just 60 minutes after his Lolla show. He spun beats including INOJ, Justin Timberlake, and Notorious B.I.G. just to name a few. We were able to catch him after his DJ set for a few words. So much love goes to Gambino. He remembered Sgt. Tibs and me from his concert in May. I guess the whiskey I bought him back in May put him over the edge.
This week wrapped up his last show on his CAMP tour in LA. Congratulations on the many sold out shows (Lolla after show sold out in 15 minutes)! Until then, I'll be on the bus...I'll never get off the bus. I can't wait for what comes next.
