GWHH recently caught up with the talented singer/songwriter Kay Cola to talk her new EP ‘Sev7n’ and songwriting.
GWHH: Tell me about Kay Cola the artist?
Kay: Kay Cola is just Kay Cola period. I’m genuinely myself all the time when making music. “I try to connect to people heart and soul.” Mostly just try to write what I’m feeling or someone else could be feeling. “Basically I’m just me dope! (Laughs)”
GWHH: You’ve written for many major artists such as Dr. Dre, The Game, and Charlie Wilson to name a few. So do you prefer to write others music or your own?
Kay: “Hmm I like writing for myself because of I know actually what I’m feeling when I hear a song.” It’s hard to know actually what the artist is feeling when they hear the song so you have to pretend for them which can be difficult. But it’s always dope to write for great artists too. “I just prefer to write for myself it gives you all the creative control and freedom.”
GWHH: How is to be the daughter of a world class Jazz musician Hubert Laws?
Kay: “Pretty dope.” I got the chance to grow up around the music industry. So I was pretty much known most about the ins and outs of the industry. Like being in the studio and on the road cause of my dad I know actually what to expect.
GWHH: What’s the meaning of ‘Sev7n’ to you?
Kay Cola: “It’s one of my favorite numbers.” Also, kind of remind me of a heavenly place or places. Perfection is definitely another meaning behind the album. The way I put the seven tracks together they are a perfect complement of each other.
GWHH: What was your mind state when writing for ‘Sev7n’?
Kay: “Just to be dope period.” I was in the mindset of say it how I would say it to the homies. “No fake shit.” Describe what most people are going through today in relationships. Just be real to my music and not be a slave. In today’s world people are slaves to money, clothes, also social media to name a few. I just wanted to be free and be at peace with my work.
GWHH: Favorite track off of ‘Sev7n’?
Kay: It would have to be 6Tnine. The song came easy to me and was real natural. The song at first was going to be about sex but I switch it. “I was thinking it would be dope if there was a relationship where they both were giving their all.” That would definitely one of my favorite tracks from ‘Sev7n’.
