News "broke" today that Jay-Z had dropped the hyphen from his name, becoming Jay Z. After everyone caught their breath and realized that all that they knew to be right in this world was not actually false, Complex posted this article reminding us how foolish we are.
After reaching out to Jay's publicist, Complex stumbled upon the revelation that the dash hasn't been in his name for at least three years now. In addition, Jay's name in print has undergone some other strange evolutions. You might recall the cover of "Reasonable Doubt," which featured an umlaut (two dots) over the Y in his name, which is something I thought only hair metal bands did. The umlaut can be seen on the cover of "In My Lifetime" as well.
And here I was, upon hearing this "breaking news," thinking this was some sort of dumb publicity stunt on Jay's part, a copycat move to mirror Kanye's "minimalism" obsession. I guess I can go back to living my life now.
