Features 18 NEW Tracks! (Tracklist after the jump!)
UPDATED COMMENTARY (07.06.12): Just wanted to add a few thoughts a couple days now after Royalty's release. The tape's been bumpin' heavy since Independence Day and I first gotta give props to Gambino for continuing to evolve from project to project. He has really become a force to be reckoned with in the game, with his witty (sometimes absolutely hilarious) one-liners, to metaphors, to emotional lyrics - combined with a distinct and varied delivery to boot. He expanded in all those aspects across the tape, in addition to branching out and working with a ton of guest artists. I liked to hear how his style meshed with some of these (RZA, Bun B, SchoolBoy Q, and oh yeah, Tina Fey can't go unmentioned, hah!), but on every featured track I was really just wanting to hear Gambino spit. Childish definitely picked the cream of the crop of Royalty as his early previews, but songs like "Bronchitis" and especially "Wonderful" are going to be in rotation as much as the others. One last thing to not be overlooked: the production. Childish was behind the boards on much of these tracks and while not 100 percent of the beats connected (for an entire project, that's rare), much of them did. A lot of unique sounding bangers on Royalty - definitely a must-have mixtape for the summer!
07.04.12: As promised, Childish Gambino gives fans more reason to set off fireworks today as he drops his hotly anticipated new mixtape, Royalty, to the masses, and it can be streamed/downloaded above! Of the previews, I gravitated to practically all of the tracks - Gambino has already proven on these that he's killin' the verses with a variety of flows. Now to dive into the rest of it as it will no doubt be my soundtrack for the day, and beyond. Features come from the likes of RZA, Ghostface Killah, Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, Nipsey Hussle, Bun B, Beck, Danny Brown, and a Chicago up and coming emcee in Chance The Rapper (plus more!). At post time, I'm just downloading it for myself so I hope to come back with some updated commentary sometime throughout the day. For now though, how about a fitting GIF...
