The Roots ‘undun’ [Short Film]

The Roots finally unleash the short film to undun – it’s a 9 minute epic portrayal that is simply a must-watch for any Roots fan… any hip hop fan. The album is in stores now and man, has it been bumpin’ since I copped it?! The Roots do it again with lyrics that will take multiple listens to fully wrap your head around, especially when considering the concept album surrounds the character Redford Stephens. As Questlove says and the video begins:

“undun is the story of this kid who becomes criminal, but he wasn’t born criminal. He’s not the nouveau exotic primitive bug-eyed gunrunner like Tupac’s character Bishop in Juice… he’s actually thoughtful and is neither victim nor hero. Just some kid who begins to order his world in a way that makes the most sense to him at a given moment… At the end of the day… isn’t that what we all do?
- Questlove

Sonically, the album is on point as well – mainly melancholy but also with elements of upbeat drums and hooks that work for the most part. And on top of that, tracks 11-14… whoa! That was unexpected. I had that playing in the car while touring LA this weekend and how fitting. Anyway, as you can tell I simply couldn’t hold back a stream of consciousness on undun any longer… go and get the album and once again, watch the short film above!
